The accident occurred near Yale Bowl, in a parking lot and tailgating area on Central Avenue, on the day of the annual Yale-Harvard football game. A Yale student and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity member, Brendan D. Ross, drove a U-Haul box truck loaded up with beer kegs into the parking lot. The vehicle slammed into several people, including Nancy Barry, 30, of Salem, Massachusetts and Sarah Short, who was a Yale graduate student at the time, who was injured at the same event.
Brendan Ross agreed to a plea deal. A plea may mean that the defendant will plead guilty to the original criminal charge in return for a more lenient sentence. In the deal Brendan Ross avoided prison time and a criminal record by and pleading guilty to driving unreasonably fast and unsafe. Nancy Barry’s family then filed a wrongful-death suit against Brendan Ross, Yale University, the city of New Haven, U-Haul and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Dozens of current and former members of the fraternity at Yale University are being sued over the deadly tailgating crash.
According to Bloomberg News the Yale University chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon is being sued over the tailgating incident that took Nancy Barry’s life back in 2011. The Huffington Post reported that 86 members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity would be brought up on charges. The Yale chapter isn’t a legal entity and doesn’t have insurance, so there’s probably not a dime to be gotten there. For employment opportunities at Yale University click here.
