According to a report from Italian media, a Salvadorean nun gave birth last week. The Huffington Post reported that the nun had no idea she was pregnant and went to a hospital when she felt cramps in her stomach while at a convent.
The nun, who is 31, is doing very well. Her son, who was born at 7.7 pounds, is also doing well. Other mothers in the hospital have been collecting donations and clothes for the mother and the child.
“I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain,” the nun said, according to ANSA, an Italian news agency. La Repubblica said that the baby was born on Wednesday.
The baby has been named Francesco, the long form of Francis. This is also the chosen title of the pope. It is one of the most common names in Italy. The national patron saint of Italy is St. Francis of Assisi.
No one from the hospital issued a statement about the birth after being contacted by Italian media outlets.
The nun is from the convent in Campomoro, which is near Rieti. The convent runs a senior center home. The convent is known as the “Little Disciples of Jesus.” Reports state that the nun is going to keep the baby. Nuns who know the woman and live with her said they were “very surprised” at the news.
