Even though Sunday is the Lord’s Day, three nuns took time to do a good deed for an animal in need. The nuns, from Nyack, New York, went to the Hi Tor Animal Care Center to adopt a dog that did not garner interest from anyone else, according to The Huffington Post.
The dog is named Remy and is a 9-year-old pit bull. The dog was at the shelter, which is located in Pomona, New York, since October. The nuns had a feeling that the dog would fit in well with them.
“I wanted to bring a dog home that might get euthanized if we didn’t take her,” Sister Veronica Mendez said in an interview with News 12. “And when I noticed the sign said ‘9 years,’ I said, ‘Virginia, we want this one, because nobody else is going to want her.'”
The executive director at Hi Tor, West Artope, spoke to The Huffington Post. Atrope said that he was shocked the nuns wanted to adopt a pit bull. All of them are older than 70.
“Most people have a pretty bad understanding of pits,” Artope said. “But Remy was sensitive to the sisters, especially to Sister Virginia, who walks with a cane. She kept up with her and was so attentive.”
The nuns are from the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine. The nuns did not have to pay a cent for the adoption either. A Hi Tor volunteer, Pauline Jamey, and Roberta Bangs, a board member at Hi Tor, footed the bill.
