A team of law students from the SUNY Buffalo Law School took home second place in the Northeast regional of the national Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition in Albany, according to the Buffalo Law Journal.
Another team from Buffalo was recognized as the Best Respondent Brief in the competition. Ten students, in their second and third years at the school, competed in the event.
The national round is scheduled for March in Milwaukee and the second-place winners will advance to that round. It is the second straight year that a team from the Buffalo area will take part in the national round. It is also the second straight year that a team from SUNY Buffalo Law School won the regional award for best brief.
“This unprecedented back-to-back showing is a remarkable achievement by our students,” said professor George Kannar.
The competition has been occurring each year since 1975 and organized by the National Black Law Student Association. The regional for the Northeast occurred during the Northeast Black Law Students Association Convention.
For students to be chosen for the regional tournament, they must take part in an intramural selection process. They have to submit a writing sample and make mock oral arguments during the previous spring semester.
