Steven M. Kaufmann, a former chair of the law firm’s global litigation practice is returning to Morrison & Foerster after a four-year stint as the chief of staff at the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Kaufmann had been appointed by President Obama.
The MCC is an independent U.S. government development agency created by the Congress in 2004. Kaufmann served as the chief of staff starting in 2010. The agency has an approximate operating budget of $900 million and makes investments in impoverished countries to reduce poverty. It also works to reduce obstacles to economic growth in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Kaufmann had worked as a lawyer for 25 years with Morrison & Foerster before joining the Obama administration. Besides being the chair of the litigation department, Kaufmann was also a former managing partner and head of litigation of the firm’s Denver office, and a former chair of the firm’s Consumer Litigation and Class Action Practice Group.
While with the law firm, before he joined the government agency, Kaufmann had maintained an active pro bono practice and had won the Colorado Lawyers Committee’s Individual of the Year and Outstanding Sustained Contribution awards.
Speaking on Kaufmann’s return, firm chair Larren M. Nashelsky said, “We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to MoFo … His experience working in the Obama Administration will bolster the firm’s existing capabilities in a number of areas – including international arbitration, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, cross-border finance, project finance and M&A.”
Brad Lui, managing partner of the D.C. office of the firm, where Kaufmann would be joining, said, “Steven is highly respected nationally for his hands-on approach, sound judgment and strategic thinking.”
Kaufmann received his J.D. from the University of Michigan. He was listed as a leader in antitrust and commercial litigation by Best Lawyers in America and was named Colorado’s Top Lawyer in the area of management and litigation by Law Week Colorado.
