Patrick Stewart, most recently in “X-Men,” was outed as gay by the Guardian in an article discussing the coming out of actress Ellen Page, according to The Huffington Post.
The error was made in the Page article written by reporter Jan Czyzselska. In the article, she said that Stewart is gay when talking about the message of support he sent to Page about her coming out.
The error was corrected with the following explanation: “This article was amended on 17 February 2014. The third paragraph originally said ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’. This should have read ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’.”
Stewart tweeted the following after the Guardian made its mistake and it was caught by Poynter:
“@Poynter But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!”
Stewart also tweeted: “Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change…at least I didn’t wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again.”
Stewart has always been a supporter of the LGBT community, saying, “From my earliest years as an actor I have always been proud of the support the creative community gives to all forms of human and civil rights.”
