Two airports in the region of Crimea were taken control of by armed men on Friday, according to Reuters.
The Ukraine government called it an invasion and occupation by Russian forces.
The Black Sea fleet from Russia, which is based in the Crimea region, denied that its forces were in the airports.
Due to the confusion of the identity of those involved, the armed forces chief was fired by acting president Oleksander Turchinov.
The Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov, posted a statement on Facebook that accuses the Russian naval forces of overtaking a military airport close to Sevastopol.
“I consider what has happened to be an armed invasion and occupation in violation of all international agreements and norms,” Avakov said on his Facebook page. Avakov said that it was a “provocation.”
A spokesman for the fleet told Interfax, “No Black Sea Fleet units have moved toward (the airport), let alone taking any part in blockading it.”
Roughly six men wearing camouflage uniforms and armed with automatic rifles blocked a road close to the military airport. They blocked the road using a truck that did not have license plates.
Foreign countries are starting to get involved in the Ukraine, with the United States telling Russia to make a point to show that it is sincere about a promise that the country will not intervene in the issues plaguing the country right now.
Issues in Crimea have escalated to the point where the parliament was seized this week and a Russian flag was hoisted by unidentified gunmen. The gunmen did not mention any demands and the building was being guarded by police.
One of the men who took control of the airport, named Vladimir, said, “I’m with the People’s Militia of Crimea. We’re simple people, volunteers … We’re here at the airport to maintain order. We’ll meet the planes with a nice smile – the airport is working as normal.”
