Diners at the T-Rex Cafe in Orlando’s Downtown Disney area, a themed restaurant run by Landry’s featuring animatronic dinosaurs and dishes such as the “Gigantosaurus Burger” and “Tyrannosaurus T-Bone” as well as a dessert called the “Chocolate Extinction,” received quite a shock when Monday afternoon a giant fish tank burst open. The water level dropped quickly. Patrons were sent scrambling from their chairs and restaurant workers tried to save the fish. According to WESH.com Orlando, Witnesses reported that several restaurant employees climbed inside the large tank to try to save some of the fish.
Witness Kate Wallace told the Orlando Sentinel that, “The staff — they were doing the best job that they could,” and that according to the Huffington Post, Wallace also reported that, “It was craziness, just kind of people freaking out. It’s not something that you see very often. How do you respond to that?”
Another diner, Michael Pappas, posted on Facebook, “Was just at T-Rex in Downtown Disney just now and the glass to a giant fish tank just cracked and water started pouring out.” According to Diner Kate Wallace who was sitting about 20-feet away, “The people sitting at the table next to it did get wet… I don’t know how they could have avoided it,” Fox News reported. ClickOrlando.com reports that a Disney spokeswoman said that the leak was small, some fish were removed and some tables had to be relocated.
There were no reported injuries and it has been reported that the workers were able to save “all of the fish.”
The Houston Company that owns T-Rex Cafe, Landry’s, issued this statement according to the Orlando Sentinel, “A seal failed on the tank causing water to leak. Employees took action and did a great job rescuing all of the marine life, caring for our guests and managing the situation. The marine life has been moved to holding tanks and the restaurant is open for business as usual.”
