The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law has announced its new dean. According to The Baltimore Sun, Donald B. Tobin was named the new dean of the school. Tobin succeeds Phoebe Haddon as the dean.
“Donald Tobin has the perfect blend of experience and skills to lead Carey Law,” said Jay Perman, President of the University of Maryland. “He has a record of leading through collaboration, a strong belief in social responsibility and public service, and a commitment to providing students practice ready skills and helping the achieve professional success.”
The press release from the school said that Haddon will return to the faculty at the university. Haddon has been dean since 2009.
“A great law school needs one thing: great people,” Tobin said. “One of the things that drew me to Maryland Carey Law is that you that here – great students, great faculty, great staff and great alumni.”
Tobin comes to the school from Ohio State University. He served as the John C. Elam/Vorys Sater Professor of Law at the Michael E. Moritz College of Law. Tobin spent 13 years at the school.

The health law program, environmental law program, and the dispute resolution, and public health and homeland security centers build on tremendous strengths here at UM Carey Law,” Tobin said. “The Women, Leadership and Equality Program helps train the next generation of leaders. And the business law and intellectual property law programs build on the incredible opportunities that Maryland’s technology and business sectors provide.”
Tobin earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He worked as a legislative aide for Senator Paul Sarbanes. Tobin also worked as a staff member for the Senate Committee on the Budget. Tobin has worked as an appellate staff attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division.
