Phoebe Haddon Named Chancellor of Rutgers Camden

The new chancellor of Rutgers-Camden will be the dean of the University of Maryland’s law school, Phoebe Haddon. Haddon will take over the position at the campus on July 1, according to The Star-Ledger. Haddon will report directly to Rutgers University President Robert Barchi.

This is the first time in history that both of the satellite campuses of Rutgers will be run by women. The new chancellor at Rutgers-Newark is Nancy Cantor. She is the former Syracuse University President. She took the position a couple of months ago.

Haddon has been the dean of the law school at the University of Maryland since 2009. In the law school’s 200-year history, Haddon was the first African American dean. She announced last year that she was retiring from her post when her current contract ended.

Barchi said, “Phoebe is a brilliant scholar and gifted administrator with a sophisticated understanding of the strategic issues facing higher education. We are proud that she will lead Rutgers University-Camden.”

“Throughout her career, she has been a powerful advocate for student resources, faculty development, academic freedom and diversity at all levels in higher education. Equally important, her work with numerous civic and professional organizations in Pennsylvania and Maryland demonstrates Phoebe’s commitment to partnering with communities for positive change beyond the campus,” Barchi continued.

Haddon has also worked as a professor at the Temple University Beasley School of Law. Haddon earned her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law in Pennsylvania. She holds a master of law degree from Yale Law School.
