The Federal Communications Commission announced new rules that govern Internet service earlier this week, according to The Huffington Post. The rules end net neutrality, which is when web traffic is treated equally.
The FCC claims that the new rules will not harm internet users.
Net neutrality is defined as web providers treating all web traffic the same. In January, a court defeated the FCC rules that make sure internet providers do not discriminate by showing or blocking specific content.
Due to the court ruling, the FCC said it would change its rules.
The new rules from the FCC permit companies to pay internet providers to stream videos and other types of content very quickly. This could create two lanes on the internet; a quick one that large companies can afford and one that features less fortunate websites.
Verizon, which sued the FCC about this issue, said in a statement, said that the company and others “have always made clear that we support an open Internet and we have publicly committed to ensuring that customers can access the Internet content they want, when they want and how they want.”
According to the FCC, the deals would be fair because companies will be forced to show how they handle traffic, how much companies are charged for access and if they have given any preferential treatment to content of their own.
