Mythili Raman, has left her position as the Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and she is joining Covington & Burling as a partner. Ms. Raman will be a resident partner in the Washington office of the law firm and will join the firm’s litigation and white-collar groups.
After law school, she had served as a law clerk to the Honorable Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and worked in private practice before joining the Justice Department, in 1996. She served as a federal prosecutor for nearly 18 years in the Criminal Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland. At the U.S. Attorney’s Office, she held a variety of leadership roles–including Appellate Chief and Chief of the Southern Division Branch Office.
As Acting Assistant Attorney General, Ms. Raman supervised the work of more than 600 prosecutors and was at the helm of the U.S. Department of Justice’s initiatives in national and international criminal law enforcement. She headed investigations of complex financial fraud, money laundering, market manipulation, financial sanctions violations, health care fraud, foreign and public corruption, cybercrime and intellectual property theft.

In 2006, Ms. Raman became the Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General. She later held a series of leadership positions in the Criminal Division during the Bush and Obama administrations, including that of Acting Chief of Staff from 2008 to 2009, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Staff from 2009 to 2013, and Acting Assistant Attorney General from 2013 to 2014.
Ms. Raman earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Yale University in 1991 and her law degree with honors from the University of Chicago in 1994.
