The law firm of Glazier Yee LLP has announced that it opened a new office in Atlanta, Georgia, according to a press release from the firm. The opening of the firm’s newest office helps expand the firm’s presence along the East Coast. The managing partner of the new office will be Marlys A. Bergstrom, who joins from Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP. Bergstrom will also head the brand new Unclaimed Property Practice Group.
The firm provides its clients with business counseling and litigation services. The firm has been in business for the past 25 years after being founded by Guy Glazier and Laura Yee.
“We are extremely proud to announce that Marlys has joined our firm. Companies that have endured an unclaimed property audit have learned that indifference to unclaimed property laws can materialize into a significant threat to the bottom line when the state auditors come knocking.” said Glazier. “Marlys Bergstrom– deservedly–is the only partner-level attorney in the country exclusively focused in this important area. Her knowledge, leadership, and proven track record of developing and implementing innovative solutions in this area simply are unmatched. Our Atlanta office is positioned to provide the best counsel available in all facets of unclaimed property, including; compliance and audit counseling and defense.”
Bergstrom’s goal as managing partner will be to expand the knowledge of business executives working in Atlanta, the Southeast and the East Coast. Bergstrom hopes to educate the business owners on unclaimed property compliance. Bergstrom also wants to maintain the leadership and integrity of the firm.
Bergstrom said, “Over the next five years, we are going to see some significant developments in the unclaimed property arena. The states’, and particularly Delaware’s, use of contingent fee auditors is garnering significant attention. Delaware, the most notorious and biggest benefactor of third party contingent fee auditing, credits 15% of the state’s annual budget to enforcement of its unclaimed property laws. When this much money is at stake, there are going to be fireworks.”
Bergstrom brings more than 20 years of experience in unclaimed property to the firm. She has worked on cases involving complex unclaimed property consulting regarding oil and gas, insurance, high tech, manufacturing, retail, travel, pharmaceutical, healthcare and wholesale distribution. Bergstrom has worked as a senior manager at Deloitte and as the Director of the National Unclaimed Property Compliance Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
