Mayer Brown has announced that it appointed Antitrust and Competition partner Jens Peter Schmidt as the partner-in-charge for the firm’s Brussels office, according to a press release. The appointment took effect beginning on June 1, 2014. Schmidt takes over for Kiran Desai, who was in charge of the Brussels office for close to 20 years.
Schmidt joined the firm in 2001 and works in the Brussels and Düsseldorf Antitrust and Competition practice. Schmidt advised clients regarding M&A merger control notifications prior to the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office.
Desai will continue to work in the Brussels office as he focuses his practice on antitrust litigation. He will also continue to serve as the co-leader of the firm’s India practice. Desai is also a member of the Ethics & Loss Prevention, New Business Intake Committee and EU Pro Bono Committees.
Schmidt said: “Mayer Brown has operated in Brussels for over 20 years and the office is now a hub for the firm’s European trade, regulatory and competition practices. Working with colleagues across Europe, and those in other jurisdictions, we have an integrated approach to our clients’ needs, particularly in the area of competition where there is increasing collaboration between the various authorities around the world. As partner-in-charge of the Brussels office, I look forward to continuing Kiran’s work in order to further develop and integrate our capabilities across our core practices.”
