Richard Fries, former chair of Bingham McCutchen’s real estate group and three other real estate and litigation attorneys have left Bingham McCutchen to join Sidley Austin’s global Real Estate and Complex Commercial Litigation practices as partners. The four partners are Richard S. Fries, Scott L. Stern, Neil S. Cohen and Todd B. Marcus. While Fries, Stern and Cohen focus on real estate, Marcus is a well-known commercial litigator who specializes in complex commercial litigation.
Michael J. Schmidtberger, managing partner of Sidley Austin’s New York office said on the event of the team joining the firm, “Richard, Scott, Neil and Todd have built substantial practices and their skills complement those of our well-established team focused on serving our clients facing a wide range of real estate and related issues.”
Alan S. Weil, head of Sidley’s New York Real Estate group and co-global coordinator of the firm’s Real Estate practice, said, “This group brings a deep understanding of the real estate industry and an extensive range of experience, from handling complex real estate transactions and litigation to advising on and structuring complicated financing deals and workouts.”
Though all four members of the team that left Bingham McCutchen are high-profile attorneys, two of them Stern and Fries beg special mention. Stern has been involved in top construction projects in New York city over the past years and has been recognized by Chambers USA, each year from 2012 through 2014.
Richard Fries is a real estate lawyer who has built up a practice of solving restructuring and loan issues through litigation tools. His expertise in solving real estate loan issues has been termed by Chambers USA as “legendary,” and the publication has recognized him each year from 2007 through 2014. In 2013, Fries was named as a Litigation-Real Estate “Lawyer of the Year” in New York City, by The Best Lawyers in America.
