Thadra (no last name provided), is a waitress. This is one of the most thankless jobs in the country, but thousands of people work as waiters and waitresses in an effort to pay their way through college or to support their family. The minimum wage in the United States for waiters is $2.13 per hour, plus tips. Most waiters and waitresses have to share their tips with the bus staff too. For those who work these jobs full-time, they are bringing home just a little over $18,000 per year, which is definitely not enough to live on these days.
Below is a video about Thadra and her battle with an obnoxious customer who wanted to make her life a living hell. She responded in the best way she knew how; by telling the customer the absolute truth. If you want a little bit of a laugh today, or just want to feel good about working in the restaurant industry, you must watch this video. We have embedded it at the bottom of this post.
The final lines of her poem are epic and they are as follows:
“But I’m not here to prove my intelligence, I am here to take your order, bring it, and drop off your check. You are here to eat, pay, leave me that quarter and scram. And at the end of the day, I’m doing a poetry show that unfortunately doesn’t quite yet cut my financial mustard.
So let’s cut through the crap and finish this transaction ‘cause I GOT ORDERS TO TAKE.”
