If you ever wondered how children are affected by racism, then you need to watch the video we have embedded in this post. Despite all the work the country has done with Civil Rights, there is still racism present today everywhere you turn. Even though there are laws against discrimination, racist views are still prevalent in a lot of people.
The video is narrated by a woman who grew-up with a racist father. She talks about living in five miles from Anniston on the Birmingham Highway at the age of 12. Despite growing up in a racist home, the girl obviously did not listen to what her father was saying based on what she says in this presentation.
This video is truly amazing, especially when you listen to the words the woman is saying. She closes her narration with the following:
“Helping the Freedom Riders really caused me to be on the fringes of my culture and society from then on. There was a Klan meeting and they were trying to decide whether to try me as an adult or let me off as a child who didn’t know better. I was considered to be weak minded by the Klan, or maybe somebody who was a little bit retarded. And if it was something that there was something wrong with me or I was a little retarded, they wouldn’t have to do anything, and that’s the solution they landed on.”
