The law firm of Sidley Austin LLP has announced via a press release that George W. Madison has joined the law firm. He will work in the New York and the D.C. offices of the firm. Madison will be a partner in the firm’s global Banking and Financial Services practice. He is the former general counsel of the Department of the Treasury.
Madison worked as the general counsel for the Treasury Department from September of 2009 to June 2012. President Barack Obama appointed Madison to the position and he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
William Eckland, the global practice coordinator of the Banking and Financial Services practice at Sidley said, “While at the Treasury Department George was responsible for overseeing a number of important initiatives, including those related to money laundering and economic sanctions enforcement, and the formation of federal agencies under Dodd-Frank including FSOC, the CFPB, FIO, and OFR. We look forward to working with George and drawing on his wealth of knowledge gained from direct involvement with significant enforcement and regulatory matters. This, combined with our team’s strong existing capabilities, will allow us to provide clients with enhanced counsel regarding compliance and enforcement issues.”
Madison also worked as the executive vice president and general counsel of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association – College Retirement Equities Fund prior to joining the Treasury Department. Prior to this position, Madison held the position of executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Comerica Incorporated.
