David Cornwell and his firm, Gordon & Rees, has filed a lawsuit against New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, according to The New York Daily News. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in Manhattan because Rodriguez has not paid his legal bills, which have totaled $380,000 and come from the firm’s work on the case against his doping suspension.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit claims that Rodriguez did not pay the balance of his bill after being advised not to by Desiree Perez. Perez is an ex-con who works as a nightclub manager and is a top adviser for Jay Z at Roc Nation.
“Most recently, Mr. Rodriguez admitted that his advisers at Roc Nation, most specifically, Desiree Perez, instructed him ‘not to pay the invoices, and to make Gordon & Rees sue’ him,” the complaint states.
The firm is also asking for attorneys fees and prejudgment interest, which could total a half-million dollars.
The lawsuit said that the firm filed a petition for arbitration back in February with the State Bar of Georgia since the firm is headquartered in Atlanta.
“Alex Rodriguez has already paid substantial legal fees to this firm,” said a spokesman for A-Rod. There are additional fees being sought from hours that continued to be billed and are the source of the disagreement between the parties. Alex looks forward to swiftly resolving this matter and moving on.”
