Three lawsuits have been filed this summer that claim violations of the labor laws in California and the Fair Labor Standards Act, according to The National Law Journal. The lawsuits have been filed by former players of the Legends Football League, which used to be called the Lingerie Football League.
All three lawsuits claim that the indoor league classified the plaintiffs improperly, noting they were independent contractors, so the league could avoid paying them overtime and minimum wage.
The most recent lawsuit was filed by Robin “Nikki” Johnson. She is the former quarterback for the Las Vegas Sin. She claims that the league operates using an employer-employee work relationship. She also said that the company calls its players employees in the contracts they sign. Players are prohibited from taking part in certain activities outside of the league. The players are also supposed to hand over all publicity and promotional rights to the league.
The lawsuit was filed on August 12 in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada.
A majority of the claims made in this lawsuit mirror the ones made in lawsuits filed against the NFL by cheerleaders earlier this year.
A class action lawsuit was filed on June 30 by Legends players in Los Angeles Superior Court. Johnson was part of the suit along with Los Angeles Temptation running back Melissa Margulies. They both claimed that there were a couple of seasons in which they did not receive their pay, even though they played in four games, attended practices and made public appearances for the league.
In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim that the league cancelled its insurance policy that covered players’ medical expenses for injuries suffered in league games or league practices. The lawsuit said that players were required to show proof of their own insurance to the league when the policy was canceled.
