Fewer Students Applying to Law School Doesn’t Mean There Will Be More Jobs in 2016

Summary: Many falsely believe that, because there are fewer applications to law schools, there will be an excess of attorney positions in the next few years. However, this is simply a fallacy as the job market for attorneys continues to change and adapt to the current market.

The amount of law school applications that schools around the country are receiving has dropped tremendously. The job market has taken a huge hit due to the downturn of the economy. Whereas many law students would love to believe that fewer attorney graduates will mean more job positions in 2016, it simply is not so. Some law schools even argue that applicants for the class of 2017 will be lucky, as there will be fewer attorneys in the field at that time.

However, the future would not be so different from the present, as the number of attorneys nationwide has already dropped. Yet, attorneys still struggle to find work and often find themselves without a job months after graduation. The demand for legal services is simply low. Law firms have added contract attorneys to the mix, and are able to outsource much legal work to other countries.

The bottom line: fewer attorneys doesn’t automatically equal more jobs. The legal market has changed tremendously, and it is doubtful that an excess of jobs will be available for new attorneys in just a few years’ time.
