Summary: Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP reaches the 500-attorney mark by merging with California’s Barger & Wolen. The combined practice of Hinshaw & Culbertson will now have one of the largest insurance law practices in the country with more than 120 attorneys.
On Tuesday, Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, a national law firm with 460 lawyers in 22 offices and Barger & Wolen LLP, a California-based law firm with 45 attorneys in six offices, announced a merger. The combined practice will create one of the largest insurance law practices in the United States with 120 full-time attorneys focused on the insurance and financial services industries.
The partner votes were completed on Aug 28, and the merger will be effective from October 1. The new entity will retain the name of Hinshaw & Culbertson and will now have over 500 attorneys in 11 US states and in London. The merger process is overseen by Kristin Stark as strategic counsel for both the firms. Stark is a principal of the consulting firm Fairfax Associates.
Barger & Wolen is one of the best-known insurance law firms in the US with an office in London, which will now go over to Hinshaw. Hinshaw already has a strong practice in insurance, corporate, business litigation and employment practices.

Barger Chairman Richard De La Mora said, “This merger creates a tremendous opportunity to extend the work we are doing in California to other regions where our clients are doing business … We are confident our clients will appreciate our newly enhanced position in California, with 90 attorneys and six locations, as well as our presence in other markets where Hinshaw has offices.”
