Clayton Spencer, president of Bates College, stated, “We are very fortunate that Geoff will be joining Bates in this key position. He comes with a reputation as a creative financial strategist who is also highly effective as a day-to-day manager. He is known as an open communicator, collaborator with faculty and staff colleagues, and an exceptionally dedicated team builder. I am thrilled that we will have the benefit of Geoff’s financial and organizational leadership as we work together to map our institutional priorities and develop the resources to support them.”

Swift is also looking forward to his new role at Bates College. He said, “I am eager to work for Bates at such an important time for the liberal arts. And I am humbled to be a part of the rich Bates history. The staff that supports the student and faculty experience is remarkable and very welcoming—it feels like a homecoming to be joining a residential college community again, this time as a professional.”

Swift’s new position will include responsibility for the finance and administration for the entire school, including an $100 million operating budget and a staff of nearly 250 employees. Swift will also look over the long-range financial planning and annual budget, as well as the facilities services, dining and events, human resources, and capital planning and construction departments.

TheCrimson.com also adds that Swift had been in charge of Harvard Law Schools’ $200 million operating budget since 2009. He assisted the law school after it had to cut funds due to the 2008 financial crisis.

Swift graduated from Amherst College and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 2002.
