DLA Piper is pleased to announced that Kathryn Keneally will join the firm in October as chair of the civil and criminal tax litigation group in the New York office. Keneally is nationally recognized as a leader in the tax and criminal defense bar. She served as Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice from 2012-2014. During that time, she oversaw the work of over 350 attorneys. She developed an innovative program to redress previous wrongdoing by foreign banks, and worked with federal and state regulators on a landmark prosecution of a large financial institute. She also developed and implemented a thorough approach to civil and criminal tax enforcement. She was awarded the Edmund J. Randolph Award for outstanding service to the Department of Justice and the country by Attorney General Eric G. Holder. The award is the highest honor that the Attorney General is able to award to any department employee.

Keneally previous represented businesses and individuals in front of the IRS and other governmental agencies. She served as lead counsel in a precedent-setting gift tax trial, and has litigated numerous cases in the Tax Court and before state and federal courts in tax, litigation, and criminal matters. She has also served as Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, and chaired two of its committees, the Committee on Civil and Criminal Tax Penalties, which addressed civil and criminal tax litigation, and the Committee on the Standards of Tax Practice, which handles ethics standards for tax practitioners. She currently serves as chair of the National Institute on Criminal Tax Fraud and the National Institute on Tax Controversy.

Keneally earned her J.D. from Fordham University and her LL.M in Taxation from NYU School of Law. She earned her B.S. from Cornell University.
