Elizabeth Trombly, 69, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and John D. Trombly, her 35-year-old son, died from a single gunshot wound.

Assistant Attorney General Stacey Pawlik stated the Amherst Police Department had been contacted and asked to do a family welfare check on Tuesday. Elizabeth Trombly’s death was ruled a homicide, and John Trombly’s death was deemed a suicide. She added that it was not clear how long the bodies had been in the house at the time they were discovered.

President Marc Mihaly sent an email to Vermont Law School students, faculty and staff on Wednesday. He stated, “It is with regret and sadness that we inform you of the tragic death of VLS student John D. Trombly. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Trombly family. We wish them strength during this difficult time.â€

The law school has had a tragic start to this school year. On July 27, beloved professor Cheryl Hanna committed suicide by shooting herself, which rocked the school’s community.

President Mihaly echoed the effects of Professor Hanna’s death in his email. “We in the VLS community have experienced great sorrow over the last few months. And we have leaned on each other and found solace. I ask that we all continue to remember the power of a kind word or deed in lifting the spirits of our friends and colleagues during this time of grief.â€
