Summary: Emma Watson is an actress and now she is an ambassador to the United Nations. In this video, she delivers a powerful speech on gender equality.
Emma Watson is best known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter movies, but not she is making a name for herself as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
The speech was delivered earlier this month in front of the UN in New York City that launched the UN Women campaign known as HeForShe. The program asks men to fight for gender equality just as much as women.
We have embedded the video of the speech from the UN headquarters in this post for you to watch. It comes in at just under 14 minutes in length, but is worth watching from start to finish.
Watson ends the speech with some stunning statistics and a poignant thought:
“15.5 million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children and at current rates, it won’t be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have a secondary education. If you believe in equality, you might be 1 of those inadvertent feminists that I spoke of earlier and for this I applaud you. We are struggling for a uniting word but the good new is that we have a uniting movement. It is called HeForShe.
I am inviting you to step forward to be seen and to ask yourself, if not me, who? If not now, when? Thank you very very much.”
