Summary: Pictures of a toothpick model of a city made by Stan Munro.
All a man or woman ultimately has for mental capacity is wit and will, intelligence and endurance. What we need, in the choice of hobbies, jobs, chores, and friends, are the material objects to apply that wit and will towards. Stan Munro, 38, chose toothpicks.
Stan first fell in love with the materials when in sixth grade, upon seeing a toothpick model. 30 years later, he’s trained himself in rendering the simple materials into exquisitely detailed constructions. He honed his interest under the constraints of building a world 1:164 to size, and, using 6 million toothpicks and 45 gallons of glue, he brought his vision to reality.
Stan began making the project, collectively called “toothpick world” when tending his wife, who became homebound due to autosomal dominant polysystic kidney disease. She has since made somewhat of a recovery. The time spent at home tending her, however, gave him the opportunity to return to his old hobby.
Certainly it took formidable patience and determination, as all projects do, but it’s the uniqueness of his enterprise that captures the world’s attention. He spends up to six months on a single building, and spent a full 6 years making the entire city.
