“There’s no face to domestic violence. It doesn’t matter what color you are, what your income bracket is, and I don’t fit the profile that I’m white, that I have a store, that I’m successful, dress cool, raised in Scarsdale, pretty affluent. It’s like, you know, what do you mean? You can’t be abused. And I try to explain to them, there’s no face.

I lived with a man for 15 years, a New York City police sergeant. I knew that it wasn’t right that he hit me, but I thought that he loved me so much that if he could get that angry to beat me up, that he must really love me. So I understand now that, that thinking is completely twisted backwards thinking, but I was raised in such a violent home that it’s what I knew. I wish I would have known that there was help, that there was someone that I could talk to about it. It’s hard. It’s like a silent struggle.

The main thing that I would want the women to know when they’re first arriving into a shelter is that they think that they’re at the bottom, but it’s really the ticket to the top. The fact that they’re able to move into the shelter is having the courage to change.”
