President of University at Albany Excited about Partnership with Albany Law School

Summary: The president of the University at Albany, Robert Jones, has expressed excitement for where a partnership with Albany Law School would take education.

The president of the University at Albany, Robert Jones, said that a pending partnership with Albany Law School will be the start of innovative academic programs for both schools, according to The Albany Business Review.

Jones was in attendance for the board of trustees meeting at the law school last week. He said that the partnership details will be ironed out in the early months of 2015.

Jones is confident that a partnership will come to fruition in the coming months even though the nature of the partnership is not known. The partnership could range from as big as a merger to as small as an affiliation.

Jones said that a partnership will provide students at both schools with innovative approaches to legal education.

“We’re not just talking about how do we sustain the current J.D. programs,” Jones said. “It’s about, ‘how do you advance legal education for the future? How do you start to provide legal education in a much different way? How do you expand the very important, traditional J.D. program to provide other opportunities for Albany Law to be a leader in the future of higher education?'”

A vote was held last Friday by law school trustees that allows for the discussion of a partnership with the University at Albany to continue.

Dan Nolan, the board of trustees chairman, said that the board is also looking at an independent option should the partnership not work for the law school.

“I wanted them to understand this is a research university and how it’s changed over time and where the university is going,” Jones said. “I wanted them to understand the value proposition from UAlbany’s perspective in terms of why we think an affiliation with the law school would be a key decision and a key strategy to help move this university to the next level of excellence.”

Prior to implementing any changes, both schools would need approval from higher levels if they come to an agreement on a partnership.
