On Wednesday morning, the law firms of DLA Piper and Perkins Coie made major announcements via press releases about additions to their firms.
DLA Piper has added former Apple and Oracle general counsel Daniel Cooperman to the firm as of counsel. He worked at Oracle under Larry Ellison from 1997 to 2007 as senior vice president and general counsel.
He moved to Apple in 2007 and stayed there until 2010 as senior vice president and general counsel under Steve Jobs. Cooperman joins the firm from Bingham McCutchen.

Ed Batts, the co-chair of DLA Piper’s Northern California Corporate and Finance Practice, said, “Dan is one of those rare professionals who has deep business and legal experience working with both start-ups and some of the world’s most recognized tech brands. Cooperman earned his law degree from Stanford Law School.
The news from Perkins Coie is along the same lines as Janis Kestenbaum has joined the firm from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). She will work in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as part of the Privacy & Security Practice as a partner.
“Janis is incredibly talented and has deep experience with privacy and security issues that are top of mind to the FTC and industry,” said Jim McCullagh, co-chair of Perkins Coie’s Privacy & Security practice. “She adds significant capacity and capability to our existing privacy practice and our clients will benefit immediately from her first-hand knowledge of FTC policy and enforcement from her experience at the highest levels of the agency as well as her familiarity with state, national and international regulatory regimes.”

Her legal career started in the Justice Department’s Honors Program. She worked as a trial attorney in the Federal Programs Branch of the Civil Division. She earned her law degree from Harvard Law School.
Kestenbaum said the following: “I am very excited about joining Perkins Coie’s highly regarded privacy practice. The group has a reputation for finding innovative approaches to consumer protection enforcement actions, such as negotiating the first ever privacy-by-design consent decree with the FTC and its recent representation of a leading mobile app developer before the FTC and state agencies.
