Summary: A third year law student has been charged with various counts of rape based upon accusations by two women.
According to The Advocate, a third year law student at Louisiana State University has been accused of raping a 26-year-old woman on two occasions, as well as raping a 24-year-old woman in 2012 after the pair met at a tailgate on campus.
Abdellatif E. Devol, 26, has been charged with forcible rape, simple rape, sexual battery, and attempted forcible rape. An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury returned the indictments. Devol, who lives in Baton Rouge, was arrested in September 2013 and is currently free on bail. However, Devol is being monitored by a GPS device as a part of his court supervision while he is out on bail.
Devol is accused of raping the 26-year-old woman at his residence in September 2013, and a second time at her home a few hours after the first alleged rape. The woman informed authorities that she had gone out drinking with Devol, and that he had invited her over to his place for more drinks. She says she told Devol that she was not interested in sleeping with him, but that Devol became increasingly aggressive and started tearing her clothes off. The woman sought help at a local hospital, and had scratches that were consistent with being the victim of a sexual assault.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the woman later placed a recorded “controlled phone call” to Devol, and asked him about forcing himself upon her. Devol “replied that he was sorry.”

After the media picked up the story, another woman accused Devol of raping her as well. She told the police that Devol had sexually assaulted and attempted to rape her after they met at an on-campus tailgate at LSU in September 2012. Her account is similar to the other accusations: that Devol invited her back to his residence, and became aggressive and violent, even throwing her on his bed. The woman desperately tried to escape, but Devol grabbed her and dragged her back to the bed and starting to remove her clothing. The woman says she told Devol to stop, and that she did not want to have sex with him, but that Devol continued touching her inappropriately. The woman escaped Devol’s residence when Devol got up to get a condom.
Devol faces two counts of forcible rape, and one count of simple rape. Devol could spend up to 40 years in prison for forcible rape, and up to 25 years for simple rape.
