Summary: Two young sisters have been charged in the shooting death of their older brother in the family’s White Springs, Florida, home.
A teen and her younger sister have been charged in the shooting death of an older brother in a homicide case in Florida, according to The Huffington Post.
Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said the following at a press conference on Tuesday:
“Anytime you come on scene with something this horrific, where you have juveniles or children involved, it’s pretty unsettling, even to seasoned law enforcement and deputies.”

The girls have been identified as Misty “Ariel” Renee Kornegay, 15, and Nicole Kornegay, 11. Both girls are facing charges of premeditated murder. The parents of the girls, Keith and Misty Kornegay, are facing charges of child neglect.
The investigation began on Monday, according to Columbia County Sheriff’s spokesman Murray Smith.
The girls ran away from home and were seen at a Dollar General store in White Springs, which is 70 miles from Jacksonville.
Smith said that when White Springs police officers approached the girls, they were “informed [an officer] of a shooting at their residence.”

Deputies from the Sheriff’s office were sent to the girls’ home in White Springs, which is where the body of Damien Kornegay was found. Damien was shot once and pronounced dead in the home.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that earlier in the evening the 15-year-old sister of the deceased retrieved a handgun from their parents’ bedroom and used it to shoot her brother,” Smith said.
Smith said that the younger Kornegay “assisted her 15-year-old sister” in the shooting, but her role in the crime is still unclear.
According to Bayoubuzz.com, Ariel Kornegay told officers that she was beaten up earlier that day by her brother, but a motive has not been released by investigators.
Officers went to the Kornegay home back in 2010 for a report of inappropriate behavior that involved Damien and Ariel. No charges were filed in the case and details are unknown.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has taken over custody of Keith and Misty’s three-year-old child. The child was discovered alone in the house with the body of Damien.
Smith said the parents were not in town when the shooting occurred and the neglect charges were filed for “failing to properly supervise the children.”
“This is a very unusual event for us here in the community — very tragic,” Sheriff Hunter said.
