Summary: The application fee at the University of Maine School of Law has been dropped for the fall of 2015 semester.
A $50 application fee will be waived by The University of Maine School of Law in the fall of 2015, according to The Bangor Daily News.
The school will waive the fee for students applying to enroll in the fall of 2015 in an effort to slow down decreasing enrollment.
The director of admissions for the law school, Caroline Wilshusen, said, “The pool of applicants to law schools has decreased nationally. Something as simple as an application fee can stop a person from applying.”

The Law School Admission Council recently released data that shows 74 law schools have dropped their application fees for 2015. In 2014, just 57 law schools dropped their application fees.
The American Bar Association said that enrollment for the fall of 2014 at law schools dropped by 4.4 percent from 2013’s fall semester. Since 2010, enrollment in law schools across the country has dropped by 27 percent.
In the fall of 2010, there were 96 students enrolled at the Maine Law School. There are just 81 students enrolled in this academic year at the law school.
“People of all different backgrounds come to Maine Law because they see the unique value of a law degree as a foundation for a career in law, government, business, public service and other fields,” Wilshusen said in a news release.

Tuition rates at the law school have been frozen since 2012 and fundraising for more scholarships has increased. Residents of Maine pay $22,290 in tuition and non-residents pay $33,360.
“A legal education remains an excellent investment, but affordability is a huge consideration,” Wilshusen said. “We need to do everything we can to reduce student debt and open the doors for the next generation of lawyers and leaders.”
