D.C. police have announced Wednesday that they’ve made a second arrest for the slaying of DLA Piper lawyer David Messerschmitt. He was found stabbed repeatedly in the chest, abdomen, and groin, on Feb. 10, and police, without a lead, had only a surveillance camera picture to go on. Last week, they arrested Jamyra Gallmon, 21, on charges of first-degree murder, and as of 7:45 a.m. this Wednesday, arrested her roommate as well, 19-year-old Dominique Johnson.
Johnson has been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and is due to appear in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday. Gallmon is due to appear Friday.
Gallmon’s lawyer has called the murder a case of “imperfect self-defense.” As the suspect had described it, she had responded to Messerschmitt’s sexual personal ad on craigslist, which was seeking an encounter with another man, with the intent of robbing him. Instead, when the lawyer grabbed her arm, he triggered what she called a flashback of a previous assault, and she ended up stabbing him repeatedly.
Messerschmitt studied at the Boston University School of Law and Ohio State University, where he met his wife, Kim Vuong, and has been working for DLA Piper for about a year.
His widow has said in a statement, after praising police for their efforts, “I have faith that the police and the courts will bring justice to David and all who loved him.”
