Summary: Prosecutors have begun Dzokhar Tsarnaev’s sentencing phase by presenting a picture of him flipping off a security camera in his holding cell.
The sentencing phase of Boston Bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev has begun, in which the youth responsible, along with his deceased older brother, for setting off bombs detonated at the end of the 2013 Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring 260 others, will be faced with a fate of either death by lethal injection, or the slower route of life in prison.
To kick it off, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nadine Pellegrini show-cased a previously unseen photo of Tsarnaev flipping his middle finger to the federal court holding cell security camera.
“He was determined and destined to be America’s worst nightmare,” Nadine said. “Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was and is unrepentant, uncaring, and untouched about even half the sorrow he has created.”
Given the apathy the youth showed during the trial, revealing little emotion, the photograph, which, since it was not filed as evidence therefore has not been immediately released to the public, clues the jurors into the mind frame Dzohkar had even three months after he detonated the bombs.
Sentencing is expected to persist for up to four weeks, and will determine what punishment is fitting for Tsarnaev to face after being found guilty of the 30 charges against him for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing.
