Summary: Convicted murderer Dr. Robert Neulander has shifted defense lawyers to Gerald Shargel.
The notorious case of Dr. Robert Neulander, recently convicted of murdering his wife in their mansion, has just been given over to notorious lawyer Gerald L. Shargel, who has dazzled the spotlight by representing such clients as crime boss John Gotti.
The peculiar bit about this is that up to this point Neulander has been defended by Edward Z. Menkin, and is changing over not for the appeal, as you might expect, but right before the sentencing.
“This is not a routine case or a routine sentencing,” Menkin had said on April 16. And while murder itself is by nature not routine, it is a wonder what Neulander is up to, hiring the lawyer Shargel, of Winston & Strawn LLP, who got Gotti acquitted of ordering the shooting of a labor union official, Joe Halderman.
Neulander’s prison term shall be decided by County Court Judge Thomas J. Miller on June 25. He could face up to 25 years in state prison for the murder of his wife.
“Mr. Shargel is an excellent lawyer and I continue to be devoted to Dr. Neulander’s cause,” said the good natured Menkin, in regards to the case.
