Summary: Fatherly.com has compiled a list of the best workplaces for new dads. The list of 50 employers across the country includes three major law firms.
Fatherly.com has released a list of the 50 best places for new dads to work. According to the article, these employers know that by allowing their employees adequate time with their families, both the employers and the employees will benefit. According to FastCompany.com, the United States is the only developed nation without guaranteed paid parental leave of any nature, but, fortunately, many organizations are taking steps to change this unfortunate statistic. For the companies that do offer such leave, whether the paid leave is covered by social security or the employer varies by country, Wikipedia notes.
Joining the list, which includes Google, Yahoo, and TripAdvisor, are three law firms: Arnold & Porter, Alston & Bird, and Baker Donelson.
How do the top law firms compare in terms of vacation and leave policies?
Arnold & Porter makes the list at number 8. It is one of the largest law firms on the planet, and it sets itself apart with a focus on pro bono work. The firm employees 1,284 individuals and offers 6 weeks of paid paternity leave. Paternity leave increases to 18 weeks if the father is the primary caregiver.
Yale Law Women recently released its list of the 10 most family friendly law firms.
To earn benefits, employees must work 25 hours per week, and a group of partners is present to help those attorneys within the firm who are interested in switching to part-time work. The firm also has an on-site day care at its main office, and it has been named as one of Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work for” over the past three years.
Alston & Bird is ranked in the middle of Fatherly’s list at number 25. The firm has major clientele such as Bank of America and 20th Century Fox. Alston & Bird offers three weeks of paid paternity leave for its employees, which increases to 12 weeks if the employee is the primary caregiver.
A rarity for today’s employers, Alston & Bird even offers a concierge service to help with errands that take up employees’ weekends. If employees need to have car repairs completed or if they need time to plan a vacation, the firm will help them do so.
In a February article, leave and vacation policies for the top law firms were examined.
New attorneys at the firm are also provided with a mentor who provide guidance and are available to offer advice.
Baker Donelson trails Alston Bird at number 26. The firm is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee and employs 1,378 attorneys and staff.
The firm offers three weeks of paid paternity leave, 16 if the employee is the primary caregiver. Interestingly, the paternity leave can be used in one stretch or it can be used over a 20-week period.
Baker Donelson also offers on-site job perks such as dry cleaning pickup, yoga, Pilates, and even massages.
