Summary: Dean Paul G. Mahoney of the U.Va. Law School is returning to teaching and scholarship after leading the school for eight years.
The School of Law dean for the University of Virginia, Paul G. Mahoney, is stepping down after eight years. He will be returning to teaching and scholarship full-time. Mahoney has turned the law school into one of the nation’s top law schools by strategically expanding faculty, improving the student support system, fundraising, and new curricular innovations.
Even during a nationwide recession, Mahoney completed a successful campaign season in 2012 by surpassing their goal of $150 million by $20 million. Over half of the alumni of the law school have been participating in giving annually during his role as dean.
The school’s endowment is the fifth-largest in the nation’s law schools at a market value of $463 million on June 30, 2014. The endowment funds scholarships, academic initiatives, and professorships. The endowment grew by 55 percent on a per-student basis during the recession.
Mahoney hired 26 new tenured and tenure-track professors, several of which are high-profile lateral educators. The new curricular innovations lead by Mahoney include the Program in Law and Public Service as well as expanded clinical and externship opportunities. The school has established better career counseling services and resources for students, including a building renovation to the Karsh Student Services Center.
The law school has placed a greater emphasis on ensuring that their graduates start off with promising jobs in legal aid offices, federal agencies, courts and nonprofit organizations, and prosecutors and public defenders offices. They have also offered increased fellowship and loan forgiveness programs to help their students work in the public service sector. Mahoney also placed a lot of effort into keep costs low for students. The school was the only top-10 law school to be recognized for its administrative efficiency.
Mahoney joined the school as a faculty member in 1990. He is an expert in securities regulation, law and economics, and corporate finance. He has loved leading the school but is excited to return to his first passion of teaching and scholarship. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale Law School.
