According to Newsweek, Jennifer Lopez may be in trouble for her May 29 performance in Rabat, Morocco. Her show, which was aired on live television, has led to public backlash and the filing of a lawsuit against the popular singer and actress.
The lawsuit was filed by a Morocco education group. Jennifer Lopez and the concert promoter have been named as defendants. The suit alleges that the performance “disturbed public order and tarnished women’s honor and respect.” According to the Huffington Post, Lopez could be sentenced to two years in prison.
The performance under fire was Lopez’s segment at the Mawazine festival. Media outlets complained about the Lopez’s suggestive dance routine, as well as her being “scantily” dressed in front of the 160,000 patrons in attendance.
In 2012, the singer suffered a wardrobe malfunction.
Mustapha Khalifi, the promoter who booked Lopez’s performance, is being pushed to resign. Khalifi also booked Maroon 5, Usher, and Pharrell for the show.
Lopez’s $20 million extortion suit against her ex-driver was dismissed in 2012.
Morocco’s Justice and Development Party called the performance “a breach of public decency” and are seeking to have a committee discuss how the show was aired in front of millions of viewers. BBC adds that Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane stated that the performance violated Moroccan audiovisual laws.
