Kellogg Foundation Gives Grant to Vermont Law School

Summary: Vermont Law School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems received a grant to address the national food policy for a healthier and sustainable system to support at-risk populations.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation granted $261,965 to the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law School for their project called “Blueprint for Integrated National Food Policy”. The project is required to be done in 18 months. The goal of the project is to address the national food policy by creating a healthier and environmentally sustainable food system that serves children and other at risk populations in the United States.

The CAFS is partnering with the Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School to complete the project’s research and product development within the 18-month period. Harvard Law School is leading the way in food law and policy advocacy and education. This expertise combined with the leadership of CAFS in food, environmental and agriculture law advocacy and education will make a strong team that can address the food system problems. The grant will allow the faculty and student clinicians to be able to develop the first ever legal outline for a healthier food system.

The two groups will first identify the agriculture and food stakeholders’ policy concerns and problems that affect human and environmental health. From there they will create a blueprint that is designed to raise more encouraging health outcomes for Americans in at-risk populations. They hope this blueprint will spark conversations on how to align the food and agricultural systems with the goals of equity, sustainability, and health.
