Summary: Uber has been facing an uphill climb of legal issues as the technology company spreads it services to other countries.
In an effort to escape some legal difficulties in Indonesia, Uber Technologies is taking the steps necessary to establish themselves as an e-commerce company. Taxi drivers have been complaining that the company’s practice is illegal because they do not have a taxi license or use a meter.
Uber has continually stated that they are a smartphone application provider. They argue that since they only provide the connection for riders to drivers through an app on a smartphone, that a transportation license is not needed.
The technology company has been facing legal troubles wherever they go. France has banned UberPop since January. Two of the bosses will be in court over the company’s policies after taxi drivers violently protested the app. UberPop allowed unlicensed driver, usually everyday people looking for extra money, to provide customers with a ride at a cheaper rate.
San Francisco has banned the drivers for Uber and other ride-sharing services from using Market Street, one of the city’s main roads. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency says the ban is to help reduce the congestion on the road.
Uber has recently faced other legal issues requiring their drivers to be considered employees for tax reasons.
