Summary: The online learning platform for law school students, LearnLeo, is now available for students at the top 20 law schools and accessible for all other students.
LearnLeo, founded by Wilson Tsu, is a program aimed at helping first year law students make it through the tedious textbooks faster so that they can spend more time studying the information. Students are expected to know the cases inside the textbooks inside and out, not only for class but for the big end-of-term exam.
The program lets students highlight the case details while they are reading so that at the end, they have an organized brief and outline. Tsu estimates this will save students an average of ten hours a week. He launched the program three years ago and has since expanded with two more programs, one for pre-law students and one for career help.
The company has partnerships with the top 20 law schools in the United States, helping a total of over 4,400 students. They have been working since last fall with venture capital firm, Founder Equity. LearnLeo is working on launching an iPad app and to be in a quarter of the 203 accredited law schools by the end of 2015.
Tsu is a 2008 Northwestern graduate that has worked as a lawyer for Kirkland & Ellis and a project manager at IBM. He saw the need while a first year law student. He says there wasn’t enough time to digest everything and synthesize it. He wanted a way to hasten the busy work so that there was more time to study.
Currently students at the supported schools are able to view cases organized by their class and syllabus. Students at the other schools are still able to access 13,000 cases in the LearnLeo library.
The other program is aimed at pre-law students so that they can learn their terminology before starting classes. He notes that often first year students are pulling double duty by having to “learn to be law students while learning law.” The program allows students to read case elements to see how a case brief is set up. They can take quizzes to test what they have learned.
The third program’s goal is to help students line up jobs after graduation in the dwindling legal market. The program is only available for students at the supported top 20 law schools. While the traditional way to get job offers is through On Campus Interviews, LearnLeo looks at GPA cut offs and alumni at the firm to help students see what really matters to them in a firm.
The program is free for students, banking off sponsorships that LearnLeo sells to law firms in hopes to have law firms see the potential talents early that they can hire early on.
