Our society has turned once enjoyable jobs into mind numbing actions that lack a meaningful connection. To keep the drive going as an attorney, there needs to be meaningful work where you actually sit down with clients to gain a sense of purpose. Without this, the spirit becomes crushed and the initial reasons attorneys pursued the career don’t matter. Harrison Barnes breaks it down to what two things that attorneys need to keep the work alive.
A skilled attorney has the educational qualifications, employment history, can see things differently than most attorneys, keeps learning, gets along with a wide array of other personalities, can get the best result in any situation, and brings in business.
An attorney with energy has the spark to keep going and doing their job effectively and efficiently. Attorneys must have the spirit to do their job since it requires fighting for others. As Barnes says, “The work does not kill this person, the work keeps this person energized and alive.” To find the energy required to do this job right, an attorney must find an area of the law that they are interested in. For some that is working at a smaller firm where they have better control over what clients they work with and what their responsibilities are.
