Summary: Rapper 50 Cent’s attempt of filing for bankruptcy in order to stall a civil lawsuit from a sex tape was dismissed by the bankruptcy judge.
Rapper 50 Cent, aka Curtis Jackson III, has been in court against Lastonia Leviston over a sex tape he posted of hers online. On the same day the trial was scheduled to deliberate over punitive damages, Jackson filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to prevent the sex tape case from going forward.
Leviston was awarded $5 million in compensatory damages by a New York jury but the case came to a halt last week while his bankruptcy case proceeded. A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled Friday that the sex tape case will continue as planned.
Included in Jackson’s bankruptcy filing was a list of creditors. He currently owes $18.4 million to Sleek Audio for an arbitration award, $5 million to Leviston, $137,880 to Bentley Financial Services for his car lease, $5,649 to Eversource energy for an electric bill on his Farmington mansion, to his grandfather Curtis J. Jackson Sr. for expenses at the mansion, and to various other smaller companies for things such as lawn care, a hot tub, carpet cleaning, and an attorney. His total liabilities for the top 20 creditors add up to $28.5 million with his assets only listed at $24.5 million.
Jackson told an E! reporter than he filed for bankruptcy because celebrity’s become a target for people trying to get money. His company SMS Productions also filed for bankruptcy in Connecticut. Jackson has been trying to get the sex tape case into a federal court, hoping that his bankruptcy would help that. The judge criticized him for trying to do this. His net worth is estimated to be around $155 million.
Jackson is represented by Patrick Neligan.
Leviston is represented by Philip Freidin and Elizabeth J. Austin of Pullman & Comley.
