Humans have an innate desire to belong. There are cultures, religions, schools, clubs, and many other organizations that people can belong to. When an attorney ignores this desire and goes for other factors like pay rate, they gradually begin to understand that they are missing something, leading to their failure at the firm and as an attorney.

Those with similar interests and values tend to gravitate towards each other. This is important to a law firm because much of what attorneys do require them to be able to work as a team. New law firms often grow fast because the partners are united in their efforts to do things differently than the firm they came from. Attorneys must be careful what stage a law firm is in when they join.

When the economy is strong, more law firms are strong and more willing to hire attorneys that they wouldn’t during a weaker economy. Older law firms have an established, stable culture are great places to join because they are often comfortable. Law firms that are failing are poisonous. The members are often not unified in their goals, hence why the firm is not successful.
