University of Georgia Law School alum State Rep. Stacey Evans donated $500,000 to the school to be made into a scholarship for first-generation college graduates. The first recipient of the scholarship will be named this fall.
Evans was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received her undergraduate degree at UGA in economics and then three years later in 2003, she earned her J.D. Evans stated about the donation, “I cannot – and do not want to – imagine my life without my degrees, and I know how close I was to being without them.” Evans wants to be able to take some stress away from talented students, making school easier for them.
For the past few years, Evans has been working in the Legislature to replace cut funding from the state’s HOPE scholarship program. Evans was able to attend UGA with a HOPE scholarship.
As a partner at Wood, Hernacki and Evans, she specialized in securities litigation, litigating cases of Medicare fraud and defamation. Evans was one of the attorneys for the lawsuit against DaVita Healthcare Partners, a dialysis chain. The company ended up agreeing to settle $495 million to settle the whistleblower case. This case helped her be able to afford this donation. She started her own solo practice almost a year ago.
