Summary: With an overall steady improvement this year in number of new legal jobs posted, it is hoped that this will reflect in other areas of the legal industry.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported better numbers for the legal sector in June. They reported an added 200 jobs in the legal services sector out of the 215,000 total jobs added to the economy. The United States unemployment rate has been holding steady at a low 5.3 percent. The current number of people employed in the legal sector is around 1,122,200. This is 4,200 more than in January.
The year 2014 saw a loss of 2,700 legal jobs so to see the numbers as high as they are in just seven months is a very good sign for the industry. Hopefully the improved job statistics will improve law school applications and enrollment numbers.
The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book reports mixed results for July’s market. Dallas has had an increase in demand where as San Francisco is reporting a weakened demand. There is an excess of qualified professionals in the city and not enough jobs.
While the U.S Bureaus of Labor Statistics’ numbers are just preliminary and may be adjusted, the overall numbers are more positive than negative. They consider all lawyers and professionals that are on a company’s payroll, including secretaries and paralegals.
