Real estate tycoon Donald Sterling made $2 billion of the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers but he is back wanting more by filing a lawsuit against TMZ and his ex-girlfriend. He claims the remarks he made referring to black people that were released to the public by his ex-girlfriend V. Stiviano were private.
The lawsuit filed against the two cites a violation of privacy that caused damage on a “scale of unparalleled and unprecedented magnitude” that cost him the ownership of the NBA team. The remarks he made led to the NBA banning him and his estranged wife to sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
His estranged wife, Shelly Sterling, was able to get court approval to sell the team since he was unwilling. She claimed and was able to prove that he had dementia and could not properly take care of his business responsibilities. Donald Sterling is now suing her, the NBA, and the two doctors that examined him, stating that they all conspired against him to remove him from the team and league.
The whole legal soap opera started over a year ago in April 2014 when a recording of Sterling talking to Stiviano went public. In the conversation, he was complaining about her spending time with black people.
The timing of the tapes being released is interesting. Shelly Sterling had sued Stiviano just weeks before, claiming that she was her husband’s mistress. While the couple has not always got along, they were civil during the recent case that required Stiviano to give back her $1.8 million home, gifts, a Ferrari, other luxury cars, and $800,000 in cash that Donald Sterling had spoiled her with during their relationship. The judge had ruled that the items were shared property with Shelly Sterling since they were a married couple.
Two days before this lawsuit was filed by Donald Sterling against TMZ and Stiviano, he had filed for divorce. The couple were just weeks shy of their 60th anniversary.
