Summary: Haynes and Boone has acquired intellectual property firm Mavrakakis Law Group to give them two new offices.
The acquisition of the Mavrakakis Law Group for Haynes and Boone gave them a Chicago office and one in Palo Alto. They will likely combine offices into one but have not decided on which location yet.
The partners in Palo Alto, Brian Kwok and Thomas Mavrakakis, will be joined by associates Amy Liang and Christopher Lubeck. Mavrakakis was the former director of patent strategy for Apple Inc. The Chicago office holds partners James Shimota and Howard Levin and associates Braden Tilghman and Aaron Taggart.
Haynes and Boone was attracted to the boutique firm by the fact that they already shared intellectual property clients Apple and Cisco Systems Inc. They were also impressed with the firm’s abilities in patent office proceedings in matters such as inter partes review.
The firm was originally founded in 2010 by Mavrakakis and Kenneth Bridges, a former Kirkland & Ellis partner. The firm was then called Bridges & Mavrakakis until Bridges took a position with Technicolor’s in-house counsel last year.
The first initial idea of the firms joining was four years ago by Haynes and Boone partner Jamie McDole. McDole was a former Kirkland partner that reached out to fellow Kirkland alumni at the firm. Actual negotiations only began four months ago when Mavrakakis was at a peak.
