Somewhere and somehow everyone got the idea that being marketed to several law firms was a bad idea. This is very untrue. Just as a business has to market itself to make money, a lawyer does too. When a lawyer only looks into a couple law firms, they don’t know if there is a better fit for them someplace else.
Too often lawyers end up in jobs that they hate either because of the city, the pay, the work environment, the culture of the firm, their fellow associates, etc. all because they didn’t do their job and look into several law firms to find a good match for them.
While their legal market may be difficult, if you do the work, you can find the legal jobs you want. Start looking for the right fit now instead of when you have to. Imagine how disappointing it will be to find that law firm that fits you perfectly in twenty, thirty years from now because you waited to start looking. We only get to live life once; there are no re-dos, so make it count now.
Only lawyers that fall in the top 1 percent need not apply to several law firms. They can get away with only applying to a few because they are already highly desired. The majority of lawyers do not fit in this category. Even with great qualifications and a big fat book of business, you are going to be better off applying to a handful of law firms where you can entertain multiple offers to figure out which one works for you than to have to settle for the one offer you receive, especially when it is with a firm you are not excited about.
As Barnes puts it, “The problem is not with the job market. The problem is with the way attorneys look for jobs.”
